Through pictures, you are saying something about how you view the world. It’s possible you may not think you’re saying anything with your pictures of your garden, or a picture of a bird perched on a stop sign. Sorry, but you’re wrong!
Every time you frame something in your camera or phone’s viewfinder, you are essentially pointing at something and saying “This is important. This is worth remembering.”
Photos can communicate what you think is funny, what you think is beautiful, what you think is majestic, or even what you think is unjust.
You can look at photos other people take and get a sense for what they think is important in the world. Do they mostly take pictures of their family? Do they love to go to concerts? Do they create artistic photographs?
Pictures are never automatic or mindless—pictures structure our particular view of the world.
